On a campaign, each cannon had 400 rounds allotted to it. 200 (~) were in the ammunition chests organic to the gun. The remainder were in the artillery reserve and depot. A judicious rate of fire was essential. Rapid firing could consume all the rounds in the supply chain very quickly. Another factor is that the chests were pre-packed.
